Memoir Coaching
Since I was very young, creative non-fiction has always been my favourite genre. It was the area I chose to focus on in my journalism degree, using storytelling techniques similar to those found in fiction writing and applying them to real-life stories. I then honed those skills over the years through freelance journalism gigs and blogging, and then cemented them in writing my own memoir, Overdue. With my decades of writing experience, I can help you learn or perfect the art of creative non-fiction, supporting you as you bring your story to life, to the page, and to the audience it is destined for.
What I offer...
and what you get
01
Story time
In our first session, you will tell me the story of your memoir - the story you're trying to tell, and that of the book so far. This is a 90-minute video call, designed to help you get the most out of coaching.
03
Feedback
Before each 1-hour session, I will read and give feedback on up to 4k words of your written work. This is where I identify what is working well in your draft and what might need fine-tuning. It is not a line-by-line copy edit.
05
Industry insights
I can share with you my knowledge of the publishing industry - the process of securing an agent, submitting to publishers, and what is involved in getting your book onto the shelf.
02
Identifying goals and targets
Together, we will create a loose structure for further sessions and set goals for you to achieve by the next one. These goals may shift and change over time, but it gives us a place to start from.
04
Emotional support
Writing a memoir is a deeply personal and sometimes arduous endeavour. Putting your own life on the page can bring up intense emotions and unique challenges. I support you through this, offering opportunities for reflection.
06
Memoir proposal
The memoir proposal is a tricky beast. It's essentially a business plan and a creative showcase wrapped up in one document. I can help guide you through the process and give feedback on your proposal.
